Learning NVC Without a Certified Trainer
For Individual Learning
(1) We suggest you start with Marshall Rosenberg’s book, Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life (order #: nvc0312). Lucy Leu’s work book, Nonviolent Communication Workbook for Individual and Group Practice (order#: nvc0313) can also support your learning. You can buy these books and other materials through our bookstore. You can find out more about Marshall’s book and NVC at PuddleDancer Press, his publisher’s website.
(2) If you would like to see Marshal teaching NVC on video, we recommend The Basics of Nonviolent Communication, An Introductory Training in Nonviolent Communication with Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D. (order#: nvc158).
(3) If you’d like to learn by listening to an audiotape or CD, we suggest starting with Speaking Peace: Connecting with Others through Nonviolent Communication (order#: nvc0306cd or nvc0307tape) by Marshall Rosenberg, for a comprehensive introduction to NVC.
(4) To support your practice of NVC, use the feelings and needs lists on this site.
(5) Join one of the email groups available through this website and share the learning process with others.
To further your learning and create a community
(1) Get together a group of people who are interested in learning and practicing together. The workbook is set up for a self-led practice group and to accompany Marshall Rosenberg’s book. You can start an open group with friends or co-workers, or a specialized group such as couples, people who are working toward social change, a religious community, etc.
For example, parents may want to form a practice group with members of your children’s play group, school, or other parents with whom you come into regular contact. Creating a supportive group of people who are also interested in using NVC in their parenting can make a huge difference in your ability to put NVC into practice.
(2) Together, purchase audio tapes and/or video tapes that you could listen to or watch together and use for practice. Some people watch a small section of a video and then practice based on what they’ve just learned.
(3) If your interest in NVC grows, consider inviting a trainer to your area. For further information on this option, contact any trainer or the cnvc office.
